14 - Sat 5 miles @ 5 pm A fine day out. Ran 3 laps around Jamaica Pond with Amby...  at easy pace.
15 - Sun 3-4 Sunny & warm out - 60° 's or so. Ran about 3 or 4 miles with Amby in Boston Commons. Still have remnants of cold and I think my breathing will be affected and my over-all strength for the race tomorrow. I'm aiming for a 2:20 but it's probably more realistic to think in terms of a 2:25. We shall see.

Monday April 16th
- "Ran as hard as I could but felt terrible from the first mile on in the Boston Marathon. Made it over Heartbreak Hill and then quit the race for good. Stopped thirty or forty times because of severe cramps all over my body but especially both sides. I had No. 38, I started the race at good pace but even though I was way behind the leaders it quickly became apparent my lungs weren't functioning as they should have and my whole body paid the price. I learned several things and am not badly upset over my race.. 1) I learned don't run unless you feel OK. 2) I learned more about pacing myself 3) I think I should have had more for breakfast I only ate 1 cup of yogurt 4) I learned not to drink so much during the race. That over drinking I did contributed to my stomach trouble 5) I learned to stay away from any food or liquid except water during and shortly after running - I became sick from guzzling a soda right after I quit running. The heat today was a bitch. It was 78° during the race & it definitely affected me & everyone. I got a nice sunburn on the back & face. Still have cramps 6 hours after running I think I lacked salt during the race because I didn't sweat like I should have. Am going to take salt tablets before (several days) the races of the future."

18 - Wed 0 Hot out, 82° . Did not run, rested. Still have chest cold. Begin training tomorrow. 
19 - Thurs 0 Rested, no running... running scare me.
20 - Fri 0 Same as yesterday. No running.
21 - Sat 15 miles Beautiful weather out. Ran for 1 hour 40 minutes at slow pace. Felt OK but still feel weakness cause of chest cold.
22 - Sun 15 miles approx Getting hot out!! In the middle 80° 's!! I find it very hard to run - have no vim or vigor - ran from 3:05 pm till 4:45 pm - 15 miles?

August

From the Log Book:

August 5 - Since the middle of April my training has been inconsistent or non existent,  Most of the last two weeks of April and throughout all of May  my running simply stopped. This was because of my trip out West, the condition, the return trip, etc. etc. Now I have begun to keep track of my running progress again. In June I began to run a little 4-5 miles a day if I ran at all; in the first few days of July I ran 14:52 for a 3 mile (2nd) at AAU in CT. At the time... and most of my running was hilly road work and in middle and later July I ran on a nearby track for 40 laps or so. In early August ran a 14:32 3 mile ... now I'm aiming for 100 miles per week hoping its not too much too soon. Main problem now is an aching lower back. I don't think its... (can't read this part... Webby)

14 - Tue 10 K race - 30:59 (Tie for 1st) A fine day for a race! Won in a tie with Mike Burke for 10,000 meter Salem Mass. road race in a time of 30:59. I could have gone faster and broken the record but Mike and I agreed on a tie. Surprised myself.

Hot as a ****** ****** in August! In the high 90° 's and bad-shit humidity. Ran 6 laps around Jam. Pond ( stopped twice - once to go to john) for 8.76 miles - got a sideache in the last 1/4 mile; ran at 4:30 pm;  Ran 10.3 miles over hilly road course in Newton, etc. near Boston College. Got sideache in the last mile from drinking so much before I ran.

Won the Bay State Marathon in Framingham in 2:28:12 for 1st. Little warm-up and no warm-down. A five lap race, ran the first three laps at easy pace and the last two at hard pace. Breathing was excellent; had aches in my legs and an aching back for the last 8 or 9 miles - shock of road?poor ( too thin) shoes?  In the 40 ° 's, no wind almost, and maybe 2 fair hills not too steep.

A beautiful day for a race, but I ran poorly; a 5th place behind (1) Amby Burfoot (2) Vitale (3) Crothers & (4) Flanagan, with a time of 23:16 over a 4.6 mile course. Felt bad 90% of the way - never felt smooth or strong and got a sideache 1 mile into the race - was not rested for this race and have a head cold - lungs hurt after and during the race. Left foot sole is sorer after the race though the rt ankle is OK. Time to increase mileage, not reduce it! Temp. today is 60°! Ate good food today though. Time to sleep z z z z...
